When you were younger, your every statement and delusional state was hinged on "when I grow up." You saw your elder cousins as demi-gods, your eyes flashing with delight as you watched the way they talked, walked, and acted, wishing and praying to be like them. Now, you have gotten to that stage and wonder what made you think that way.
As a child, you have big dreams that leave you excited during the day and ecstatic at night. They say, “Dreams are a reflection of what you think,” so when you sleep, you see yourself in fine cars and big houses. You see your grown-self signing deals, publishing books, and working in a big firm. And when you are not sleeping, your dream doesn’t end- you daydream, and you love that feeling… of hope, of better days ahead.
But slowly, anxiety takes over; the baggage that comes with being an adult weighs down your dreams. You let the thorns of adulthood sting deeply into those dreams. Then, comparison follows like a twin. You weigh yourself in the same scale with others and feel let down, thinking they are all better than you. You let comparison steal your joy and make your dreams feel small. All your plans for adulthood turn into a big joke. “Is life messing with me?” you ask no one in particular. You laugh at your plans; they now seem unattainable. What were you thinking when you made those plans? It’s only a child's play, of course.
But, is it?
No, it is not. Life might not be as rosy as you envisioned, but that doesn't mean it won't get better. Don't toss your dreams aside; hold on to them tightly. They are not unattainable. Yes, they are scary and a bit laughable, but that's what dreams should be like. Adulthood may not match the picture you expected, but so what? Keep moving, keep doing what makes you you, even when it gets difficult. You might not get exactly what you want, but you can at least try. As Mike Tyson says:
"I'm a dreamer. I have to dream and reach for the stars, and if I miss a star then I grab a handful of clouds."
So, hold on to your dreams. Don’t talk them down; make sure they don't remain mere dreams but become a big reality.
"Do all you can to make your dreams come true." - Joel Osteen
